good morning, everyone, welcome to "early start." a lot's going on this morning, i'm john berman. >> indeed quite a news day. i'm zoraida sambolin. i'm live in cleveland, ohio. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. let's get started here. we're live in cleveland with the horrifying details about what went on in the house behind me on seymour avenue for ten years. we're going to have more on that but first, this morning, we're getting a first look at the man many are calling a monster. ariel castro accused of holding three women inside of his home now facing three counts of rape and four cases of kidnapping. listen to a reporter inside woio firing questions at castro inside prison last night? >> why are you covering your face? what do you have to say to those woman? how can you do that? what kind of monster does this?

>> reporter: you see no response there. there is breaking news as well. unage mainable sickening details obtained by cnn. it is disturbing the torture, the abuse suffered by amanda berry, gina dejesus and amimiche knight. what they found on monday and how one of the female captives was allegedly starved and beaden during pregnancy to induce miscarriages. pamela brown is tracking that story. good morning, pamela. they told us to prepare ourselves for really horrific details, and they certainly are. >> that's right, zoraida, we are learning new details. the circumstances surrounding the alleged abductions of ten years ago. according to this police report, the police report says that amanda berry was walking home from burger king when ariel

castro offered her a ride home after he told her that her son worked at burger king. as far as gina dejesus, ariel came back without his daughter and told gina he would give her a ride to his house to meet the daughter. and also with michelle knight. he chained them up, event level let them roam in the home free of the chains. also michelle state at least five times we was pregnant with ariel castro's baby. and manda berry said she had the baby in the house. they but the baby plastic pool under her while she was delivering and michelle knight was forced to deliver the baby.

and michelle states that ariel told her if the baby died he would kill her. we're also learning more details about the state of mind of these women after years in captivity. >> reporter: a law enforcement source tells cnn that amanda berry had hit her breaking point. that she was desperate to get out of the house on seymour street. but why was she able to escape now after more than ten years in captivity? >> something must have clicked and she saw an opportunity. and she took that opportunity. i said it the other day and i'll say it today that she is the true hero- >> reporter: that same source says that the other two women gina and michelle could also have run but chose not to, even though they were not bound. and that decision reflected the women's state of mind. the sources go on to say the women relied on each other for survival and though they were mostly kept in separate rooms. they only left the house twice.

>> we were told they left the house and went into the garage in disguise. those are the two times that were mentioned or that they can recall. >> reporter: the homeowner 52-year-old ariel castro is charged with kidnapping and raping the three women. he's also charged with kidnapping the daughter. >> i just signed criminal complaints charging ariel castro with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. >> reporter: in a surprise twist, no charges have been brought against the brothers at this time. the two had been taken into custody. >> there is no evidence that these two individuals had any involvement in the commissions of the crimes committed against michelle, gina, amanda and the minor child. >> reporter: authorities have talked to ariel castro and another source close to the situation tell cnn that the young women were debriefed by police providing them with vivid details about what happened in that boarded up house. one emerging detail chains were

found inside that home. that same source said the girls watched their parents on tv at vigils for years and knew their parents were still looking for them after abducted. questions remain about a young woman named ashley sommers who lived close by and went missing. >> there is no new information that's come to light about her. >> again, ariel castro facing four counts of kidnapping, three counts of rape. he will make his first appearance here at the justice center at 8:30. we will be carrying that live and, of course, bring you the very latest. >> all right. really looking forward to that as he faces that arraignment. pamela brown reporting live. for the first time in a decade the kidnapping victims in cleveland are surrounded by family and a lot of friends. and we're hearing over the course of ten years the alleged captor only let them out of his house twice. but now, finally, they're home. >> gina! >> reporter: after more than a

decade in activity, home at last. an entire neighborhood seemingly turned out to show support for gina dejesus reunited with her family after nine long years. she was held captive in the same boarded up house as amanda berry and michelle knight. shielded by a family member and rushed inside, gina gave a thumbs up to the crowd. she was finally free. her father overjoyed was greeted with high fives and lots of hugs. her mother said she never gave up hope. >> even the ones that doubted i still want to thank them the most. because they're the ones that made me stronger. the one that made me feel the most that my daughter was out here. >> reporter: blocks away neighbors, family and friends welcomed another kidnapping victim amanda berry. she emerged from this van with her 6-year-old daughter born in captivity. amanda's sister spoke to a swarm of reporters. >> i just want to say we're so

happy to have amanda and her daughter home. at this time, we would request privacy so my sister, niece and i have time to recover. >> reporter: the third victim, michelle knight remains hospitalized but said to be in good condition. her family said she looks pale but they're hopeful she will be relessed soon. >> i'm hoping that my daughter lets me see her. i would love to see her. >> reporter: as these three victim begin to reclaim their lives. another prominent victim shawn hornbeck who vanished in missouri in 2002 and found alive four years later offered advice. >> your family's your strongest thing. that would be my advice to know that they're always there for you. >> i've got to tell you, there was not a dry eye around here as they were witnessing those two girls coming home yesterday. the third girl, we don't know much about michelle knight. at least right now we don't. she was the first to be

kidnapped. according to police reports she delivered amanda berry's six years ago and even revived the newborn with mouth to mouth resuscitation when she stopped breathing. listen to reports when they arrived at the home monday. they instantly knew. and michelle knight leaped into one of their arms. >> this has got to be for real. >> others in the house. >> we found them! we found them! we also have a michelle knight in the house. i don't know if you want to look that up in the system. 32 years old. >> michelle knight's mother said that she searched for her daughter on her own for years because she believes police gave up on the case. barbara knight now living in florida is hoping for a reunion. >> i'm thrilled. and all i want to do is hug her and say i love you, and i'm glad

that you're fine. it really hurts because, you know, i haven't seen her for so long i understand can't wait to see her because she was my daughter and my best friend. >> i've got to tell you, that's a really tough situation because we spoke to her son freddie who is michelle's brother. he says there's a lot of bad blood between the family and that michelle doesn't want to see mom. so at the end of the day, we're not sure what's happening there. i do want to mention yesterday we were over at the dejesus family. the sister of gina said that she spent time with michelle at the hospital. she said, we're all talking about how pale she sand how she doesn't look well. but she actually went to high school with this girl. she said she's always been a slight girl but that she's in great spirits. that she's talking to everybody and she's very grateful. the big question now is, when she is released, where will she

go? >> hopefully, everyone will continue with their recovery at an incredibly fast pace. zoraida, thanks so much in cleveland. the other major story we're following right now the long blockbuster jodi arias murder trial. arias will be back in court today, the day after the jury finally reached a verdict. >> we the jury duly impanelled and sworn in the above entitled action upon our oaths do find the defendant as to count one first degree murder guilty. >> and then this stunning development. just minutes after that verdict, arias tells a phoenix station she'd rather get the death penalty than life in prison, prompting authorities to put her on suicide watch. cnn's ted rowlands is live in phoenix with more than that really shocking interview, ted. >> yeah, john, the fact that she did an interview just minutes after this guilty verdict is just the latest twist in this soap opera-like trial which

continues. in that interview, she says she was shocked by the verdict. and as you mentioned she said she would rather die than live the rest of her life in jail. >> do find the defendant as to count one, first degree murder, guilty. >> reporter: jodi arias had very little reaction in the courtroom to the guilty verdict but minutes later she did an interview with phoenix television station kxaz. arias said she knows why the jury didn't believe here but she maintains that she didn't plan the murder of alexander. >> there was no premeditation on my part. i can see how things look that way. i can see the felony murder because the way the law's written. the whole time i was fairly confident i wouldn't get premeditation because there wasn't premeditation. >> reporter: she also said she hopes the family of travis

alexander will find peace. in the courtroom when the verdict was read, alexander's sisters broke down with emotion. >> they're happy. we would rather have travis back but we can't have travis back, so with that said, this say good day. >> reporter: outside the courthouse, hundreds of spectators cheered the guilty verdict. some people were even overcome with emotion. why so emotional? >> justice is searched that's all we needed. >> reporter: the guilty verdict means jodi arias is eligible for the death penalty and air lee yas says she hopes that's what her sentence would be. >> the worst outcome would be natural life. i would rather die sooner than later. lob jevty runs in my family. i'm pretty healthy. i don't smoke. so that's not something i'm looking forward to. i said years ago i'd rather get death than life. that's true today. i believe death is the ultimate freedom so i'd rather have my

freedom as soon as i can get it. >> and jodie ai arias will be b in court today for the penalty phase. >> it's shocking she was a allowed to do an interview at all, thanks, ted. this just into cnn. new development in the disappearance of michigan mother jessica heeringa. police have found her blood outside the mobile station where she worked. investigators say they only found a small amount of blood and that her family has been notified. we're following a number of developments in the boston marathon bombing investigation. boston police chief ed davis expected to be the first in testify in washington today at the house homeland security committee hearings on the bombing. meantime the battle over what to do with the remains of suspect tamerlan tsarnaev continues. massachusetts governor deval patrick said it's still a family

knight. allegedly by this man air real castro who faces kidnapping and rape charges. details how castro allegedly abducted the women in early 2000s. what officers first found when they first arrived at his home on monday and how one of the female captives was allegedly starved and beaten to induce miscarriages. pamela brown is tracking all of these disturbing developments this morning. i guess, pamela, this explains why michelle knight is still in the hospital recovering. >> absolutely, zoraida. disturbing details indeed. we are learning more about the circumstances surrounding the alleged abductions involving these three women. in an initial report from cleveland police, in this report it says around ten years ago, amanda berry was walking home from burger king when ariel castro offered her a ride home after he told her that his son

also worked at burger king. in this report it also says that he lured both michelle knight and gina dejesus into his car as well. when he brought the women back to his home. he allegedly initially chained them up in his basement inside his home. let them free from those chains and let them roam on the second floor of the home. zoraida, we're also learning more about the pregnancies of these women. in this report it says that michelle knight was pregnant at least five times. and that when castro found out, he would starve her and hit her in the stomach to abort the baby. and according to the report, michelle was forced to deliver amanda berry's baby in a small plastic pool inside the home. castro allegedly told michelle that if the baby dhied he would kill her. so certainly horrifying details here. >> absolutely. do we know anything else about the state of their mind?

>> well, zoraida, we're starting to learn about that. they're still talking with investigators. but what we do know is that on monday, when amanda berry escaped from the home that the other two women could have escaped. in other words, they weren't bound, but they chose not to. and in talking to sources who have first hand knowledge of the investigation, that's an indication that they were fearful to leave the home. we have learned from sources that castro would pretend to leave the house and test the girls and see if they would attempt to flee. and if they did, that he would punish them, he would discipline tell me. so it was clear that they were fearful that they, over the course of ten years that they may have been brainwashed. you never know after being in captivity for that long, when the door's open you can be free, how you're going to react in that situation. so there's a combination of factors that may explain why these two women did not flee along with amanda berry on monday.

>> no, absolutely. i know we're going to find out more details. pamela brown reporting live. amanda berry's cousin crystal milton is speaking out what it was like for her family for ten years amanda was missing without a trace. you always want to keep hope. but after so many years goes by, you lose a little bit, but in the back of your mind, you still keep it. i mean like jaycee dugard i think is her name. was missing for 18 years, and they found her. so, you know, when you hear stories like that, that keeps your hope alive. >> we'll hear more from amanda berry's family coming up a little later this morning scheduled on "starting point." we have big news in washington on the cnn security watch. riveting testimony from the man who was the state department's number two on the ground in libya on the night the u.s.

consulate in benghazi was attacked. gregory hicks told the congressional oversight committee about the phone calls he received from ambassador chris stevens during the september 11 attack in benghazi. now hicks, a 22-year-old service office claims he was demoted when he started questioning the state department's version that night. dana bash has more from washington. >> reporter: for the first time, a gripping public account of the benghazi attack. on the second in command to the slain ambassador chris stevens. >> i found two missed calls on the phone, i punched the phone number i didn't recognize, and i got the ambassador on the other end. and he said, greg, we're under attack. >> reporter: for 30 minutes, greg hicks told the story of the deadly attack as he lived it from a command center at the u.s. embassy in tripoli. >> at about 3:00 a.m. i received

a call from the prime minister in libya. i think it's the saddest phone call i've ever had in my life. he told me that ambassador stevens had passed away. >> reporter: republicans invited hicks to bolster gop accusations that the administration botched the response and misled americans afterwards. especially u.s. ambassador rice's television appearances calling it spontaneous response. >> i was stunned. my jaw dropped and i was embarrassed. >> reporter: hicks also argued the u.s. military could have helped squash the attack by having fighter jets overhead. hicks also says four special forces personnel were ready to board a plane from tripoli to benghazi but were stopped by their superiors. it fueled gop outrage. >> how did the personnel react to being told to stand down?

>> they were furious. i can only say -- well i will quote lieutenant colonel gibson. he said it's the first time in my career that a diplomat has more balls than somebody in the military. >> reporter: the pentagon says special forces were told not to go because they were not equipped for only pat and needed in tripoli to care for the wounded headed their way. the republican chairman summed up this nearly six-hour hearing saying it may be over, but the investigation continues as for democrats one summed up their assessment by saying not only was there no smoking gun there wasn't even a lukewarm slingshot. dana bash, cnn, capitol hill. 37 minutes after the hour. other top stories we're following a new tragedy at a factory in bangladesh as the death toll from last month's deadly building collapse climbs even higher. at least seven people died in

death. 46-year-old ricardo portillo died later. cotton harris moore pleaded guilty to breaking into an airplane hangar during his infamous 2010 international crime spree. according to the associated press the admission won't affect his prison sentence. harris-moore pleaded guilty last year in connection with the break-in as part of a bigger plea deal. the plea resulted in a seven-year sentence. new this morning, carnival cruise line ""try yum" was back at sea. it's headed for the bahamas for

start," everyone. in just a few hours, jodi arias will be back in court for the penalty phase of her murder trial. she's been placed on suicide watch after a jury found her guilty of first degree murder for killing her ex-boyfriend. now literally minutes after the verdict arias told a phoenix tv station she'd rather be executed than spend the rest of her life in prison. this was a trial that seemed to go on forever. for months, people by the millions were glue ed to their screens, hooked by every lurid detail. several hundred spectators gathered outside the phoenix courthouse and millions more watched from home as jodi arias learned her fate. rousing applause from the crowd as the verdict was read. >> we the jury duly impanelled and sworn in the above-entitled action upon our oaths do find

the defendant as to count one first degree murder guilty. >> reporter: after four months on trial, arias was stoic. travis alexander's friends and family embrace and wipe away tears. it was a dramatic culmination to the courtroom drama that sparked so much fascination. a real life soap opera that had trial enthusiasts completely hooked. >> i'm addicted. i get home i immediately turn my computer on. i turn my tv on. >> reporter: the details of the case lurid and racy for daytime tv. overwhelming volumes of evidence. >> jodie ann arias killed travis alexander. >> reporter: and of course the dans she spent on the stand, sometimes in tears. not since casey anthony have court watchers be so glued to the tv, transfixed on this salacious trial. some cable news network

welcome back to "early start." i'm zoraida sambolin. and i'm live in cleveland, ohio. and we're getting our first look this morning at ariel castro. he's the man accused of kidnapping three women and holding them captive in his home for a decade. castro is facing four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. listen to a reporter of woio from cleveland peppering him with questions that everyone wants answered. >> why are you covering your face? what do you have to say to those women? how could you do that? what kind of monster does this? >> we're also learning a lot more about the abuse and the tort tutor that was endured by

amanda bary. gina dejesus and michelle knight. in an initial report obtained by cnn, knight was allegedly starved and beaten after multiple pregnancies in order to induce miscarriages. that's probably explaining why michelle knight was in the hospital. initially when we talked to freddie, her brother, he said that she looked pale. we talked to gina's family who spent some time with her. they said she's always been a slight girl referring to how short she is. the good news is they told us her spirits are really strong. >> that's great to hear. 52 minutes after the hour. an 18-year-old high school student from tempe, arizona is under arrest charged with building bombs at home. police say a maid working in the suspect's house found a device that appeared to be a bomb, she was right. she took it to a local firehouse

where firefighters called in the bomb squad. a search of the home uncovered bomb-making devices. and marijuana will be taxed and sold in stores. the new tax will fund the process to regulate marijuana in the state. and the second measure dictates that only people who have lived in colorado for at least two years can get a license for a retail store. last year, colorado passed the personal recreational use of marijuana. a big win for cheerleaders. a judge ruled that the squad is free to wave banners with bible verses written on them.judge said the banners not against the law. the school told the cheerleaders they could not display the banners. they plan to appeal the judge's ruling. all right. that is in fact a real life angry bird. essentially a group of wild peacocks causing havoc in the

in cleveland firing questions at castro inside prison last night. >> why are you covering your face? what do you have to say to those women? how could you do that? what kind of monster does this? >> and there is breaking news this morning, as well. shockening, sickening new details in a police report obtained by cnn talking about the abuse suffered by amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight and they were originally abducted, what officers found when they first arrived at ariel castro's home on monday and how one of the female captives was allegedly starved during pregnancies to induce miscarriages. good morning to you, pamela. >> good morning to you, zoraida. that's right, some disturbing new details we're learning from

that initial police report from cleveland. according to this report, when amanda berry was abducted she was walking home from her shift to burger king when ariel castro offered her a ride home after he told her that his son worked at burger king. michelle knight and gina dejesus was also lured into castro's car, according to this report. and ariel castro allegedly chained them up in the basement inside his home but eventually let them roam free from the chains in the second floor of his home. michelle knight told police she was pregnant at least five times. when castro found out he would starve her and hit her in the stomach to cause a miscarriage. according to this report michelle was forced to deliver amanda berry's baby in a small plastic pool inside the home. and castro told michelle if the baby died he would kill her. we're learning in this report that amanda's daughter was never treated by a doctor while in captivity. these are some of the disturbing details we're learning about

these victims' time in captivity. law enforcement source tells cnn that amanda berry had hit her breaking point, that she was desperate to get out of the house on see more avenue. but why was she able to escape now after more than ten years in captivity? >> something must have clicked and she saw an opportunity. and she took that opportunity. and i said it the other day and i'll say it today that she is the true hero. >> reporter: that same source says that the other twem two women, gina dejesus and any she'll knight could also chose to run but did not have. that reflected the women's state of mind. the women relied on each other for survival and did interact though they were mostly kept in separate rooms. they only left the house twice. >> we were told they left the house and went into the garage in disguise so they -- those are the two times that were mentioned or that they can recall. >> reporter: the homeowner,

52-year-old ariel castro, was charged with kidnapping and raping the three young women. he's also charged with kidnapping berry's 6-year-old daughter who was born in apartmentivity. >> i just signed criminal complaints charging aerial castro with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. >> reporter: in a surprise twist, no charges were brought against his two brothers at this time. the three had been taken into custody. >> there is no evidence that these two individuals had any involvement in the commission of the crimes committed against michelle, gina, amanda, and the minor child. >> reporter: authorities have talked to ariel castro and another source close to the investigation tell cnn the young women were also debriefed by the fbi and police, providing them with vivid details about what happened in that boarded up house. one emerging detail, chains were found inside the home. that same source says the girls watched their parents on tv at vigils for years and knew their families were still looking for them after they were abducted.

questions remain about a young woman named ashleigh summers who lived close by and went missing after the three women. >> there is no new information that's come to light about her. >> and according to the initial report we're learning that the victims were only allowed outside of the home a couple times into the backyard where the garage was in full disguise wearing wigs and sunglasses. also we're learning about those dramatic moments following the 11 call with amanda berry. according to the report, both gina dejesus and michelle knight were inside the home when police arrived on the scene and when a cop came inside the home, they threw themselves into the arms of that police officer. ariel castro will be appearing here at 8:30 this morning at the justice center. again, he faces four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. >> just horrific retails. pam brown reporting live. thank you very much.

so let's switch gears and talk about the joyous time here in cleveland. a reunion that family an friends of the kidnapped victims thought would never be possible. after more than a decade in captivity, home at last. an entire neighborhood seemingly turned out to show support for gina dejesus, reunite with her family after nine long years. she was held captive in the same boarded up house as amanda berry and michelle knight, shielded by a family member and rushed inside, gina gave a thumbs up to the crowd. she was finally free. her father overjoyed was greet with high fives and lots of hugs. her mother said she never gave up hope. >> even the ones that doubted, i still want to thank them the most because they're the ones that made me stronger, the ones that made me feel the most that my daughter was out there. >> blocks away, neighbors, family, and friends welcomed another kidnapping victim, amanda berry. she emerged from this police van

with her 6-year-old daughter born in captivity. amanda's sister spoke to a swarm of reporters, still emotional and struggling to adjust. >> i just want to say we are so happy to have amanda and her daughter home at this time. our family would request privacy, so my sister and niece and i can have time to recover. >> reporter: the third victim, michelle knight, remains hospitalized but is said to be in good condition. her family has said that she looks pale but they're hopeful she will be released soon. >> i'm just hoping that my daughter because i would love to see her. >> reporter: as these three women begin to reclaim their lives, another prominent kidnapping victim, shawn hornbeck, who vanished in 2002 and found alive more than four years later, offered some advice to these three brave women. >> your family is your strongest thing. that would be my advice, to know that they are always there for you. >> the disappearance of amanda berry and gina dejesus were both

well publicized cases in the cleveland area, but not much is known at michelle knight. she was the first of the three victims to be kidnapped. that was back in 2002. according to police reports, we just told you about, she actually delivered amanda berry's daughter six years ago. listen to police dispatch tapes of the moment officers arrived at castro's home on monday. they instantly knew who berry and dejesus were and michelle knight literally leaped into one of their arms. >> thrilled. there might be others in the house. we found them. we found them. we also have a michelle knight in the house. i don't know if you want to look that up in the system. 32 years old. >> michelle knight's mother says she searched for her daughter on her own for years because she believes police gave up on that case. barbara knight now living in florida says she's hoping for a reunion. >> i'm thrilled. and all i want to do is hug her

and say i love you and i'm glad it wasn't you that died. and it really hurts because, you know, i haven't seen her in so long and i can't wait to see her because she was my daughter and my best friend. >> john, you know, i spent a lot of time with freddie, her son, michelle's brother. and that whole family dynamic is a very tough situation. they allege a lot of abuse over the years and a lot of neglect. and so, you know, the question is that now when michelle does get released from the hospital, where is she going to go. but, you know, a side note which is very positive is that the family of the dejesus has spent a lot of time with her at the hospital, with michelle, and they say she's also in very good spirits and looking forward to her release. >> we are all looking forward to that release. zoraida in cleveland, thank you so much. another major story we're following this morning,

blockbuster jodi arias murder trial. she will be back in court today for the penalty phase of the trial in is the day after the jury finally reached a verdict. >> we the verdict dooley i'm panelled and sworn upon our both do find the defendant guilty of first degree murder. >> truly stunning development just minutes after the this verdict, jodi arias telling a phoenix television station she would rather get the death penalty than life in prison. this prompted authorities to put her on suicide watch this morning. cnn's ted rolands is live with that shocking interview. i can't believe it happened. >> yeah, it is hard to believe that the sheriff's departmental loued it to happen and that her lawyers allowed it to happen when she still has the death penalty phase ahead of her in this trial. but this has been a bizarre trial from the beginning and that is just the lightest twist. she says that she was surprised by this verdict. as you mentioned, she said she would rather be executed than

live the rest of her life in jail. >> do find the defendant as to count one first degree murder guilty. >> reporter: jodi arias had very little reaction in the courtroom to the guilty verdict, but minutes later, she did an interview with phoenix television station ksaz. arias says she understands why the jury didn't believe her because of the lies she originally told investigators. but she maintains that she didn't plan the murder of her ex-boyfriend travis alexander. >> there was no premeditation on my part. i can see how things look that way. but i didn't expect the premeditation. i can see the felony murder because of how the law is written but the whole time i was fairly competent i wouldn't get premeditation because there was no premeditation. >> reporter: she also said she hopes the family of travis alexander will be able to find peace. in the courtroom when the verdict was read, alexander's sisters broke down with emotion. >> they're happy. you know, we would rather have

travis back but we can't have travis back. so with that said, this is a good day. >> reporter: outside the courthouse hundreds of spectators cheered the guilty verdict. some people were even overcome with emotion. >> why are you so emotional? >> you know, justice was served and that's all we needed. >> reporter: the guilty verdict means jodi arias is eligible for the death penalty and arias says she hopes that's exactly what her sentence will be. >> the worse outcome for me would be natural life. i would much rather die sooner than later. longevity runs in my family. i'm healthy, i don't smoke. i would probably live a long time. so that's not something i'm looking forward to. i said years ago that i would rather get death than life, and that still is true today. i believe death is the ultimate freedom, so i would rather just have my freedom as soon as i can get it. >> reporter: and, john, jodi arias will be back in court along with this jury as court

reconvenes at 1:00 local here this afternoon to begin the penalty phase. >> what will go on with that penalty phase? what can we expect to see, ted? >> there's two segments basically. today we'll start to hear the state argue that she's eligible for it. the jury has to answer that question first. that process should only last a day, day and a half. if they say yes to that then it will be the mitt tags phase where jodi arias defense team will fight for her life. that will take about a week. then the jury will deliberate and decide one way or the other whether she should live or die. >> ted rowlands covering this case, thank you for being with us this morning. now to a new development in the disappearance of michigan mother jessica. police say her blood was found outside the exxonmobil station where she worked. she disappeared you will remember on april 26th during her shift there. investigators say they only found a small amount of blond her family has been notified.

following a number of new developments in the boston marathon bombing investigation. police chief in boston ed davis is expected to be the first to testify in washington today at the house homeland security committee hearings on the bombing. meanti meantime, the battle of what to do with the remains of suspect tamerlan tsarnaev continues. it's still a family matter as no cemetery in the state has been willing to except tsarnaev for burial but the police chief in the town where the body remains in the kind of legal limbo is begging for help in resolving the matter. >> beyond this, there is a need to do the right thing. we are not barbarians. we bury the dead. so i am publicly appealing to those with authority to provide a burial site, do so, and do so quickly. >> one other development to tell you about. the widow of tamerlan tsarnaev has hired a criminal lawyer with experience in handling terrorism cases. catherine russell has not been charged in the case.

we are live in cleveland, hisself. if just a short time from now ariel castro will make his first court appearance to face kidnapping and rape charges. the details surfacing today are beyond comprehension. we're going to have the very latest for you. death is the ultimate freedom. shocking from jodi arias. and emotional and politically charged testimony about the night the consulate was attacked in benghazi. welcome back to this special edition of "early start." i'm john berman in new york. >> nice to see you, john. i'm zoraida sambolin. i'm live in cleveland, ohio. and we have new developments unfolding right now in the cleveland kidnapping investigation, including really horrifying details of the abuse suffered by amanda berry and gina dejesus suffered over the course of time.

we're getting the first look at the former bus driver who police say held the three women captive inside his home. he is facing kidnapping and rape charges. in an initial incident report obtained by cnn details how castro allegedly abducted the women in the early 2000, what officers found when they first arrived at his home on monday, and how one of the female captives was allegedly starved and beaten by castro during multiple pregnancies in order to induce miscarriages. pamela brown is tracking all of these latest disturbing developments for us this morning. what can you tell us, pamela? >> zoraida, according to this initial incident report obtained by cnn, we are learning new or rid details about how castro lured his victims into his car and then brought them to his home. in this report it says that amanda berry was walking home from burger king after her shift when ariel castro offered her a ride home after he told her his

son worked at the burger king. also in this report it says that michelle knight and gina dejesus was also lured into his car. from there they were taken to his basement allegedly, chained up and eventually castro let them free from the chains and let them roam up stair on the second floor of his home. he only let them go outside the home a couple of times in full disguise, wearing sunglasses and wigs. that's where the garage was in the backyard. we believe he only allowed them to go into the garage. michelle told police that she was pregnant at least five times and when castro found out he would starve her and hit her in the stomach to cause a miscarriage. michelle was forced to deliver amanda berry's baby in the small plastic pool inside the house, according to this report, and castro allegedly told michelle that if baby died that he would kill her. at one point the baby allegedly stopped breathing and michelle administered cpr. the report says that none of these women were ever treated by

a doctor while they were in captivity. zoraida? >> it is so disgusting. we've been listening to this all morning long and every time you're mortified by what you hear. you mentioned that they left the house maybe a couple times. do we know where they went? >> zoraida, we know that the garage was in the backyard, so we've learned from authorities that the women were brought to the garage only a couple of times. i spoke to a law enforcement source who said that the women were brought there because essentially he wanted them gone for whatever reason, if he had a guest coming over. we know that one of castro's band members came to the house and reported that nothing seemed out of the norm. so it seems as though castro would put the women there in order to avoid any suspicions at the house.

>> all right. pamela brown reporting live for us. thanks for the details. this morning aplymamanda be and gina dejesus is back with hair families. michelle knight remains in the hospital, however. doctors are saying that she is in good condition. one man who played a big role in bringing them home after their escape on monday is cleveland city councilman matt zone. he has been working very closely with the dejesus and knight families during this ordeal. thank you very much for joining us this morning. i know you've been very busy. i know that this is personal for you because you have really followed gina's disappearance. can you tell me how this felt for you personally? >> well, i was a new freshman councilman in roughly six months after gina went missing. i received this frantic phone call from her mother nancy wanting assistance to spread the news that gina was no longer here. and so i met with the family. we organized a huge rally. and then we did a mass canvas

where 150 volunteers came. we went knocking door to door putting out fliers to try to find out where gina might be and spread the news that she was gone. >> so gina is now finally back home with her family. what was that like? how is she doing? you were there yesterday when all of this was happening. >> it was just a myriad of emotions. you know, the family has such tremendous faith. the mother and father would never accept the fact that their daughter was not coming home. they always knew she was alive. they just felt it. i think it's a mother's intrue i guess so. they know that child is still there. when she came home, there weren't many words said at all. she didn't say a word. she just gave the thumbs up and the crowd erupted. when i was able to embrace felix and embrace nancy and hug one another, no words were exchanged. it was like we spoke for hours. >> you are getting misty eyed as you are sharing this story. >> yeah. >> really emotional time for you as well. everybody wants to know how gina

is doing, what her spirits are like. you got to spend some time with her. what can you tell us? >> i didn't get to spend much time with her. i saw her. i spent -- oh, boy, about four hours with the family, with her aunt, with her cousins, and then a few hours with her parents. she's incredibly strong. her parents are so proud of her. physically she's doing well. this is going to take some time and really, i'd like to encourage the community to kind of give them their breathing space. time will heal. but she has a long road to haul. >> we were talking yesterday, we were there and we witnessed that incredible celebration as family was just coming and going constantly. they did tell us that they are being very protective, very selective. that gina is deciding who she will see. but what i thought was really interesting as myra, her sister said, one of the first things she asked for was a burger king chicken sandwich no, mayo. she seems to be adjusting very well to being back home. >> she is.

and when we had this impromptu press conference she was in the house with myra, with her brother ricky and with other family members reconnecting because that was the first time in nine -- almost ten years that she saw her family. it was just such an emotional afternoon yesterday. >> i know that you've worked trying to bring all of these girls back home. i want to ask you about michelle knight because she's still in the hospital. we're waiting to hear where she is going to go when she gets released from the hospital. there's a lot of tension between that family. so i just want to know if you know anything about her. we're hearing she's in good condition right now. >> from what all accounts i've heard and the briefing i was a part of yesterday she is doing very well. i'm looking forward to meeting her mother. i've never met her mother. i know her mom is up from florida now and is really looking forward to meeting her. we have established a cleveland courage fund for these three young women. they're going to need a lot of help and anyone who would want to give to the cleveland courage fund because these were three courageous young women, can do

so at any local key bank, quite frankly, any national key bank, as well, or they can mail their contribution to 1422 euclid avenue, in care of the cleveland foundation, cleveland 44115. >> we'll have that information up as well so folks can help if they're so inclined to do so. and amanda, what can you tell me about her? >> amanda is just elated that she's home. i was talking to a colleague of mine who serves in that neighborhood where she lives. and she was just thrilled yesterday, just to have a pizza. the simple things of life that we take for granted. you spoke about how gina just wanted a chicken sandwich and amanda just wanted pizza. these are things that young girls do, and all of us, and to have those simple things in life really say something about the ordeal they went through. >> matt zone, i appreciate you being here this morning. i know this is personal for you and it's a huge personal celebration for you as well. so congratulations.

steven during the attack. hicks, 22-year officer claims he was demoted when he started questioning the state department's version of events that night. dana bash has more from washington. >> for the first time, a gripping public account of the benghazi attack from the second in command to the slain ambassador chris stevens. >> i found two missed calls on the phone. i punched the phone number i didn't recognize, and i got the ambassador on the other end. and he said, greg, we're under attack. >> reporter: for 30 minutes greg hicks told the story of the deadly attack as he lived it, from a command center at the u.s. i'm bass difficult in tripoli. >> about 3:00 a.m., i received a call from the prime minister of libya. i think it's the saddest phone call i've ever had in my life. he told me that ambassador

stevens had passed away. >> reporter: republicans invited hicks to bolster gop accusations that the administration botched the response and misled americans afterwards, especially u.n. ambassador susan rice's television appearances calling it, quote, spontaneous protest. >> i was stunned. my jaw dropped. and i was embarrassed. >> reporter: hicks also argued the u.s. military could have helped squash the attack by scrambling u.s. fighter jets to go overhead. the joint chiefs chairman testified in february that was not possible. hicks also says four special forces personnel were ready to board a plane from tripoli to benghazi but were stopped by their superiors. it fueled gop outrage. >> how did the personnel react to being told to stand down? >> they were furious. i can only say -- well, i will quote lieutenant colonel gibson. he said, this is the first time

in my career that a diplomat has more balls than somebody in the military. >> reporter: the pentagon says special forces were told not to go because they were not equipped for combat and needed in tripoli to care for the wounded headed their way. the republican chairman summed up this nearly six-hour hearing saying it may be over but the investigation continues. as for democrats, one summed up their assessment by saying, not only was there no smoking gun, there wasn't even a luke warm slingshot. dana bash, cnn, capitol hill. >> thanks to dana for that report. a new development this morning in the disappearance of michigan mother jessica heeringa. her blood was found outside an exxonmobil station where she worked. she disappeared during her shift there. they only found a small amount of blood. they also say that her family has now been notified. police in rural kansas admit they have no idea where a missing toddler is this morning. 18-month-old lana bailey was last seen with her mother at a

farm where caylee's boyfriend lived. the bodies of caylee bailey, the boyfriend and another man were discovered at the farm earlier this week. right now police have no suspects in either the murders or the little girl's disappearance. the teenager who allegedly punched a soccer referee will likely be charged as an adult in the referee's death. they intend to charge the teen with homicide by assault. he died may 4th after suffering serious head injuries in that attack. new this morning, the trouble appear to be nearly over for carnival cruise line triumph ship under the own power triumph left the terminal in alabama where it was towed after losing power in february. you will remember, of course, that more than 3,000 passengers endured a nightmare cruise for days without power or running water as that ship was towed across the gulf of mexico. triumph now headed to the bahamas for more repairs and we are told an upgrade to its entertainment areas. so still ahead here on
